Comparative Politics

Terrorism: Religious, Ethnic and Ideological Politics – PS 4710

This course instructs students on the basic conceptual issues with terrorism, including its roots, tactics, and effectiveness. An equal portion of the course is dedidicated to the effectiveness of counterterrorist tactics used by states and their cooperative endeavors to eradicate transnational terrorist groups. 

Global Mass Media and Political Coverage – PS 4004

This class examines the structures of different media from around the world to determine whether factors such as geography, culture, economy, and political institutions have an effect on political coverage. 

Western European Politics - PS 4553

This course examines the democratic processes, institutions, social movements, and economic development of Western Europe, with particular attention given to the structural and cultural role of the European Union.

Comparative Government - PS 1513

This course is intended as an introduction to some of the basic concepts, topics, and issues encountered in the comparative study of politics. While a variety of countries are used to serve as illustrative cases,  the United States is frequently referenced as a point of departure.

International Relations

Global Hunger and Global Security – PS 4004

This class examines the security-development nexus in the context of global politics and examines the consequences of resource allocation. Since the fall of the Soviet Union the largest security threat comes from the absence of power rather than its preponderance, suggesting that development and security are entangled concepts that must be simultaneously addressed in our globalized world.

Peacekeeping and Intervention – PS 4415

This course examines the controversy surrounding the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations, including legal and human rights violations, as well as the standards of what comprises a successful peacekeeping intervention. 

Introduction to International Relations – PS 1400
This course is an examination of the main actors in international relations, how they interact, and the problems that they face in the global system.
